The young four-year-olds in the Dragonflies Class step up their transition in broadening their increasing cognitive skills and emotional/social growth toward independence. Our experienced teachers begin to guide children toward problem-solving on their own. They begin to learn words and techniques used to progress toward benign conflict resolution and clear expression to others of how they feel. It is also important to practice listening to others and accepting that they too feel strongly about the same things. This is a very critical building block toward preparing for their eventual transition to basically being on their own in the soon-to-come kindergarten year.
By now our class is ready to have an expanded circle time, with calendar practice, a weather reporter, letter of the week, number recognition in the higher brackets, and a chores chart with individual tasks the child is responsible for. Circles will also include presentation time with individual sharing and questions and answers from one to another. There is also an opportunity to be "Special Person of the Week". Each child proudly will display their photo board and talk about members of their family and fun pictures of themselves. Stories become increasingly longer and eagerly enjoyed with students bringing in their favorite books from home to enjoy
Our teachers will observe and assist with beginning printing, project work, artistic expression, and practice in learning to bring balance to our bodies through continuing to "take a big breath", and express what they need and how they are feeling. The requirement for treating one another with care and respect is emphasized. We want to begin having children go forward from our program as the next caretakers of Mother Earth. And of course, we still want to have plenty of fun! Bike day is very big, with lots of two-wheelers dropping their training wheels.
